The South Beach Diet was created by a cardiologist at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Arthur Agatston, created the diet for his overweight patients. Originally it was for patients who were in need of open heart surgery but their weight made them a high risk candidate.
From that point on it was also used for people who were at a high risk for future cardiac problems. Eventually the book known as “The South Beach Diet” made its way in the main stream media. It has become one of the best diet programs in decades! The diet allows people to still eat a good variety of foods and the recipes are simple and delicious.
The South Beach Diet Program is divided in to three phases. However, although it may appear similar to the Atkins diet it is not at all similar. The South beach Diet is not all about protein it is about a well-balanced diet to lose weight.
Phase one of the weight loss program is what’s called the induction period. It is a 2 week period where many carbohydrates are severely restricted. The purpose of Phase one is to jump-start the weight loss. You can still eat several foods including green vegetables (salads), most other vegetables, nuts (great source of protein and snack), and meats are plentiful in this phase. You can also have cheese, fruits (apples and berries), low fat yogurt and starchy carbs (brown rice, oatmeal, and whole grain breads.)
Phase two allows all the foods from phase one and slowly adds more foods such as vegetables and fruits that were off limits in phase one. This phase will last for the duration of your weight loss plan whether it be one month or over a year until you reach your target weight. Most people report losing one to two pounds a week which is a healthy amount of weight loss.
Phase 3 is the maintenance phase and this phase allows you to eat everything in phase two and maintain your weight. It is often referred to as a new way of eating: Eating to live not living to eat!
The South Beach Diet online website has over 350,000 members and a community for support and questions. The site also includes hundreds of recipes that are yours for the borrowing. Sample meal plans are also included on the website and in the book.
A sample breakfast would be scrambled eggs, bacon, tomato juice and a hot decaf beverage with low fat milk and a sugar substitute.
A sample lunch would include a chicken salad with low fat dressing (no bread.) Your dinner would consist of a lean piece of meat, and two vegetables. You also get three snacks throughout the day and must drink decaf beverages and plenty of water.
The South Beach Diet has proven to be a life saver for many individuals and offers several recipes that actually taste good and are good for you. Once you become accustom to eating healthy foods and new versions of what you once considered junk food you will come to appreciate the South Beach Diet and new way of life.
